I didn’t really know what to expect when I agreed to check out a new book by Lee Wolfe Blum called Brave is the New Beautiful. I knew a little about Lee, that she wrote about body image and eating disorders. And, I knew I liked her writing. (She’s a part of my writer’s group–the Redbud Writers Guild) But, what kind of book would this be?
Once I opened those pages I soon found out. This book would bring me to tears, keep me flipping the pages even after my husband had turned out the light, and inspire me to grow in my faith.
Brave is the New Beautiful is a beautifully woven series of stories. Some of them are Lee’s, but many are the stories of courageous women who have faced difficulties most of us have only witnessed on television dramas. These stories, friends. Wow! They will move you. Uplift you. Encourage your soul. Surprise you, even.
Need a Perspective Refresh?
And, they may also change your perspective. On everything.
I find that taking a bigger, broader perspective of the world and its challenges helps me to get a better grip on my own struggles. This book will certainly do that for you if you let it.
Lee’s struggled with body image and disordered eating. She’s sat in the counselor’s chair talking about these issues, and she’s worked as a mental health practitioner. She “gets it” from every angle. But, in this book, she takes an entirely different perspective–not analyzing true beauty or trying to solve the issue of body image–rather exploring stories of brave women whose lives and boldness will inspire you.
I don’t want to give too much away because I want to invite you to read this book. It’s the perfect summer-take-on-vacation read. Check it out on Amazon here or find a copy at your local bookstore. You won’t regret it.
P.S. I may just so happen to have an extra copy of this incredible book. Would you like me to send it to you? If so, leave a comment below or on social media and tell me a few sentences about the bravest woman you know. I’ll pick a winner by May 15. So, don’t wait!
