The holidays are here and with them comes a helping of stress bigger than your Uncle Al’s heap of mashed potatoes at Thanksgiving dinner. You want to enjoy the season. You want to relax and make it a memorable time for your family. But, you can’t seem to shake the heaviness of the to do list and the burdens of life that . . .
- Zoom Out — I didn’t say zone out. A life lived in comparison to a screen or novel will only escalate a sense of heavy discontentment. Rather, take your life and swipe the screen until you can see things a little wider. Most of us stress and obsess over details. We get bogged down in short-term struggles and miss how far we’ve come.
- Lose Your Hammer — You can’t fix it. Repeat after me. You can’t fix it. If someone else’s issues are bogging you down, you have no magic abilities to transform them. Instead, pray your knees off. Husband won’t do what you hoped he would? Feeling like your parenting is second to sucky? They pray, pray pray. Old habits creeping back and it’s not even February yet? Pray some more. But, let go of the need to fix it all. You can’t. Only Jesus can. He needs your obedience, but not your help.
- Serve — I’ve found that the best way to feel lighter, more joyful, and freer in this life is to get my mind off myself. One of the best ways I’ve found to accomplish this is to serve others. It can look different, depending on your gifts, but as a single person, serving in the church nursery helped me spend less time stressing over when/if I’d ever have children of my own. Now, that I have four kids with me almost 24/7, I enjoy opportunities to serve others through giving time..
