Blessings in the Ordinary Day: Friends Reveal Where to Find Purpose

“Chips, salsa and a large margarita please,” my two best friends exclaimed as they stumbled through my doorway with their arms full of bags, blankets and pillows for the weekend’s festivities.

The second they walked through my doorway, my heart felt so full. There are people in your life that completely shape you who you are and who you will be. And for me, that’s my two best friends from high school. Even though we don’t get to see each other very often, when we do, it’s magical.

We headed to the cutest little Mexican Restaurant that is well known for their margaritas and when I say we ordered a large, imagine five frozen margaritas in one glass. Yup, we were in for a good night!

Our “catching up” conversations turned to tears as we reminisced on the beautiful lives God has given us. One married with a blonde-hair blue-eyed two year-old baby boy, one married and loving the newlywed life and one getting married in a few months, we laughed at how crazy different our lives are. From growing up in a small town and doing everything together, to now looking at how unique and different our God-given paths are.

Is This What “Adulting” Looks Like?

As the conversations turned to our struggles in life, I learned about hardships my best friends were currently facing. From struggles of wedding planning and test-taking, to being a young stay-at-home mom who just wants to feel desired. I realized even when everything looks great from the outside, our paths are so different and we all have struggles.

With a few more sips of my margarita, I cleared my throat and said, “Is this how it’s going to be forever?”

My friend from across the table raised her eyebrows in confusion and responded, “What do you mean?”

“Well, I mean, my life seems perfect to you two doesn’t it?” I said as I looked at my margarita sitting in front of me avoiding all eye contact. “I have this beautiful home, a great job, an amazing husband, and yet, it’s not enough. I don’t feel enough. I should be really happy and feel this life purpose, and yet I don’t. I feel lost, stressed and anxious all the time. Is this how adulting looks like forever? When are we ever going to feel enough? When is it going to feel like we are right where we should be?”

As I lifted my tear-filled eyes my friend locked hers with mine and said, “Mari, you are exactly where you need to be. God has a plan for you and even when you don’t feel you are in that plan, that’s when He is working the most within you. You need to open your eyes and find the blessings in every ordinary day. There is a blessing every single minute if you pay attention. Heck, this morning I spilled coffee on my shirt. Usually, I would let that ruin my day, but instead, I went and changed and realized it was a blessing I even had a clean shirt to change into. If you seek God with your whole heart, that’s when you will find Him and when you find Him, that’s when you will feel your life purpose.”

In that moment, I felt as if time stopped. Goosebumps grew on my arms and a warmth grew in my heart that could only be explained as the Holy Spirit wrapping his everlasting arms around my heart.

In that moment, my best friend was a doorway for me to God’s great love and grace.

In that moment, I realized, I am right where God needs me to be.
