Humble:: Carly Simon, Walmart and Me

My One Word is HUMBLE. That’s a big word for a 5’1” lady.

If you aren’t familiar with the My One Word movement by Mark Ashcraft, here’s a brief synopsis: Allow God to lead you to one word that will be your focus for the entire year.

I was so excited to start this study with my Small Group! I prayed and prayed asking God to reveal to me what He needs my One Word to be. Everywhere I looked I saw the word HUMBLE.

Everywhere.

Seriously.

I didn’t like this word. I begged and pleaded for God to let SLEEP or NAP or HUG be my One Word. But He just kept putting HUMBLE in front of me. So I accepted that HUMBLE and I are going to get real close this year.

I started spending time with my word. I looked up various definitions of humble. I looked up, read, and began writing down Bible verses about humility in my journal.Peacock- You're so vain Compared to Who

A few days into viewing myself and my life using HUMBLE as my lens, we were running low on Honey Nut Cheerios. Being a mother and wanting to serve my family humbly with love, off to Walmart I went! As I was nonchalantly walking the aisles, I realized I was comparing myself to my fellow shoppers.

I am ashamed to admit it. I surprised myself when I heard my very own thoughts. On this day, I wasn’t degrading myself with my thoughts of comparison. Friends, I was degrading others. I was viewing myself as better than them! Yikes.

The Holy Spirit grabbed His microphone and immediately filled my heart and mind with Philippians 2:3. Instantly, I felt convicted that I was not being humble at all. I thought of myself as better than others.

“Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.”

Thank you, Holy Spirit for also blasting Carly Simon’s 1972 hit “You’re So Vain.” I love it when God shows off His sense of humor!

When we get sucked into comparing ourselves with others, we’re treading on thin ice, my friends. Not only are we being unfair and unkind to ourselves and to others, but we are not honoring God at all.

Living a life devoid of humbleness is not God’s best for me . . . I know he has better for you too.
